Sprite turns an NBA sponsorship into a worldwide platform built around packaging and data. Vizio loads its free streaming service with more than 40 creator channels to win CTV budgets. Agencies are putting synthetic audiences into real planning work, with a clear limit on what they can tell you.
Sprite is borrowing a proven sponsorship playbook and putting it on the can.
Sprite launched a global platform called 'Never Stop Refreshing the Game' after Coca-Cola returned as the NBA's official soft drink partner following a ten-year absence. Nikola Jokic, a three-time NBA MVP, joins Olympic gold medalist Anthony Edwards on the roster. Sprite has centered its advertising on Edwards since reviving the 'Obey Your Thirst' tagline in 2024. The effort rolls out worldwide now and runs into 2027 across North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia Pacific, Africa, Eurasia, the Middle East, and India and Southwest Asia.
The platform goes well past media. Limited-edition NBA and player cans carry QR codes that unlock VIP tickets, official Wilson game balls and exclusive gear through interactive digital games. It also includes 'NBA 2K' integrations, game-day food delivery deals and a 'Hoops of Refreshment' effort to refurbish community courts. Oana Vlad, Sprite's global brand vice president, said: 'Coca-Cola and FIFA are the North Star and exactly the ambition that we have for Sprite and basketball.' She also said: 'We know packaging remains our most important touch point with consumers.'
The smart part is not the athletes. It is the can. Every QR code is a first-party data capture point that Sprite owns, and the World Cup numbers show what that is worth at scale. Most brands rent attention from a sponsorship and walk away with a logo placement. If your packaging cannot collect data or trigger an action, your sponsorship is a billboard.
A platform is a repeatable system, and a campaign is a single flight. Sprite is adapting a structure Coca-Cola already proved with FIFA instead of inventing a new one. When your category has a proven model, adapt the model and change the creative. That is faster and cheaper than starting from a blank page.
Walmart's Vizio is treating creators as programming, not as a media add-on.
Walmart-owned Vizio is adding more than 40 creator-led channels to WatchFree+, its free ad-supported streaming service. The lineup spans gaming, comedy, food, lifestyle, sports and travel, with names including MrBeast, Amaury Guichon, Ryan Trahan, Nick DiGiovanni, Sam and Colby and Uncle Roger, plus a 'Hot Ones' partnership with First We Feast. A creator-led series, 'Holiday Chocolate Workshop' with Guichon, will be exclusive to WatchFree+. Geico is presenting sponsor of the exclusive film 'Jingle Bells Wedding Bells.' Geico CMO Arianna Orpello said: 'Where people spend their time watching entertainment matters, and we want GEICO to be part of those moments.'
The ad infrastructure behind it is moving too. Walmart Connect announced a Warner Bros. Discovery partnership offering private marketplace deals in Walmart DSP, the first time Walmart's audiences reach live TV ads, and a similar deal with Spotify. Vizio OS reached 32 million yearly active devices in the first half of 2026, up 20% year over year, and WatchFree+ viewing hours rose 58% year over year in the second quarter of Walmart's fiscal 2027, according to the article. Walmart bought Vizio in 2024 for $2.3 billion.
Creators stop being a campaign line item when they become the schedule. Vizio is not paying creators to talk about a product. It is turning their audiences into inventory it can sell with Walmart's purchase data behind it. For brands, the question changes from which creator to hire to which creator channel to buy against, and how you will measure it.
Synthetic personas are getting real budget. The useful question is what they cannot replace.
Digiday's Media Buying Briefing reports that agencies and clients are adopting synthetic audiences in earnest. Goodway Group struck a deal with data company Arima to use a 'synthetic population' of U.S., British and German consumers in media planning, and also works with Optable on synthetic personas. Vurvey Labs works with Magnum, Vans and Kenvue, and Havas took part in an $8.5 million funding round for the company. Aveeno Body's strategy brief time dropped from 30 days to three days with Vurvey's tool, as reported in the briefing. WPP and Dentsu are also using synthetic data in their work.
The limits are stated plainly by the people selling and using it. Chad Reynolds of Vurvey Labs said: 'LLMs give you the top of the bell curve, the most common answer.' Code & Theory's Stef Hoffman said of the tools: 'It informs judgment, but it doesn't replace judgment.' The same briefing cites WARC projections that Alphabet, Amazon and Meta will take 59.7% of global ad spend this year, about $659.6 billion, which is the budget pool this planning work is meant to steer.
A synthetic persona is fast and cheap, and it is also the average answer. That is fine for a first pass at a brief. It is a problem when your job is to find the audience that behaves differently from the average. Use these tools to cut the first week of planning, then pay for real people before you spend real money.
Reynolds' point about the top of the bell curve is the whole lesson. Large language models return the most common pattern in their training data, so they are strongest where audiences are typical and weakest at the edges where niche brands win. Treat synthetic output as a hypothesis generator and test it against first-party or panel data before it shapes budget.
Walmart ties together two of today's stories, the Vizio creator push and its retail media business.
Walmart appears twice in today's reporting. Vizio, which it bought in 2024 for $2.3 billion, is now a creator-programming and CTV ad business, with Vizio OS at 32 million yearly active devices. Walmart Connect, the advertising arm, grew revenue 43% year over year excluding Vizio in the second quarter of fiscal 2027 and is adding live TV and Spotify audiences to Walmart DSP, per Marketing Dive.
WMT closed at $113.08 on Oct. 12, up 1.55% on the day. The snapshot figures below come from StockAnalysis.com's live page on Oct. 22, after the stock had moved higher, so they describe the current setup and not the edition date. Analyst consensus on that page is Buy across 43 analysts. For our readers the point is the business model: an ad network that sells shopper data against streaming and creator inventory.
The P/E of 43.67 prices in a lot of advertising success before it arrives. What matters for us is whether Walmart Connect keeps growing at a pace like the 43% reported while Vizio converts creator viewing into ad revenue. Watch the next earnings call for ad revenue and WatchFree+ hours. It is a watch item, not a call.
